Eureka @ NLCS 2019

On Tuesday 26th March 2019 the Maths Departments of the Junior and Senior School came together to host Eureka @ NLCS – a mathematical competition of our own creation.  After a trial run with our Y5 girls last year we had 20 teams from 16 visiting schools competing. Each school had a team of four Year 5 pupils.
The competition involved a team challenge cross number (a mathematical cross word), a fast fire game of 24 and the pièce de résistance was a mathematical treasure hunt around the school. Year 9 kindly supplied some helpers and many staff from here and visiting schools helped man the stations and mark. The atmosphere was full of excitement and there was a great spirit of competition whilst everyone grappled with some great problem solving. Congratulations to our team NLCS Buss who won the event, and Habadashers boys who were the runners up.

DC Beagle Challenges

We have attended three DC Beagle competitions this year so far: at Belmont Y5 placed 6th and 14th out of 35, We managed to enter two different Y6 competitions giving 4 extra girls a chance this year. At Aldwickbury in November we were 4th and 10th out of 61 teams and at Orley Farm we were 4th and 18th out of 41 teams. Well done girls!

Young Mathematicians Award 2018

In November Leila, Bianca, Rachel and Jiatan took part in the Young Mathematicians Award. This is a national problem solving competition run by Explore Learning in partnership with nrich. The girls won the first round, and were put through to the regionals. They won the regional round too, but unfortunately were not picked as one of the finalists. Fantastic result!
