Sami Half term Maths Camp - By Ria Patel

During half term I attended the Sami Maths camp. Sami stands for supporting African Maths initiatives. It was set up in 2013 to support some local African math’s initiatives and has been brought over to the UK. It was from 10:00-4:00 at Kings College Waterloo and had many interesting talks and lectures varying from Statistics to How random is your phone when playing music? It was a great experience and is for years 9-11. I would recommend it for budding young mathematicians who would like an insight to the various job opportunities a maths degree has to offer. For example, we had a lecture from a mathematician who has the chance to visit places in Africa such as Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya and actually helps the local farmers understand climate change using statistics. This is an example of how maths can tie in with other subjects i.e. Geography.  We also had a computing session where we learned how excel can be used in many different ways especially in showing statistics. The camp runs for a week and covers a variety of topics such as, Statistics, Combinatorics, Geometry, Modelling and Quantum theory and chaos. You can choose to go for however many days you want. Another great reason to attend this camp is it will give you an insight into a university that is ranked 16th in the world. I hope to see more NLCS girls attending next year!
